History of

ISVIR
Kerala

The journey of the Kerala Chapter of the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (ISVIR) is one rooted in resilience, collaboration, and a shared vision for excellence. Despite the rich legacy of our national society, the absence of a local association in Kerala left a void that needed to be filled. It was amidst this backdrop that a group of dedicated interventional radiologists in Kerala took the initiative to bridge this gap and foster a stronger sense of community and collaboration among local practitioners.

In 2018-19, the seeds of collaboration were sown with the inception of the informal BUG (Bad, Ugly, and Good) meetings. BUG was the first initiative to get all practising IRs in Kerala under one common group for communications and exchange of ideas and news relevant to IR. BUG meetings happened twice yearly predominantly as a ‘complications’ discussion forum which provided the young IR community of Kerala with a new friendly platform where they could get peer review and support. BUG meetings regularly invited external faculty from across India and at their advice and support the idea for official formation of a Kerala State Chapter of ISVIR was planted and nurtured among the IR community in Kerala.

The turning point came in 2023, during the annual National Conference of ISVIR in Hyderabad, where members from Kerala put forth a resolution to establish the Kerala State Chapter of ISVIR. This resolution, born out of a collective desire to further the field of vascular and interventional radiology in Kerala, was met with unanimous approval by the general body meeting of ISVIR. Thus, the Kerala Chapter of ISVIR was officially born, marking a significant milestone in the history of interventional radiology in our state.
Since its inception, the Kerala Chapter of ISVIR has remained steadfast in its commitment to promoting excellence, collaboration, and innovation in vascular and interventional radiology. Through a diverse range of educational initiatives, research endeavours, and advocacy efforts, we aim to empower our members, elevate standards of care, and advance the field of vascular and interventional radiology in Kerala and beyond.

As we embark on this journey together, let us draw inspiration from our past achievements and look forward with optimism and determination. Together, we will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence in vascular and interventional radiology in Kerala.
